Battle: Los Angeles
Once again the world is threatened by aliens looking to pillage our natural resources, restrict our freedoms and generally introduce us to a face full of pain.  I’m not surprised if this sounds familiar to you as it has been the main stay of popular science fiction for years.

Independence day Battle: Los Angeles is another such film where a race of water hungry aliens attack coastal cities the world over in a coordinated attack to colonise our world and exterminate us.  Aaron Eckhart (Batman Begins; The Core) is the conflicted, callous yet strangely likeable sergeant thrown in with a group of young soldiers tasked with evacuating civilians from the immediate area of battle.

In all honesty it is all very predictable and really doesn’t bring anything new to the genre but it is enjoyable as long as you set your expectations to the right level.  Aaron Eckhart is pretty good with some memorable moments that are derailed by some cheesy one liners.

The rest of the cast is OK with some good jokes here and there and some attempts at making genuine connections with the audience but there isnt much I can write about them.  Michelle Rodriguez simply plays herself so we are not really seeing anything new from her.

The film does look very good however with LA in ruins (I can’t remember if that was pre- or post- invasion) and the aliens well rendered.  Some of the alien vehicles did look a bit flat though.

If you are looking for a movie that will stimulate discussion in the pub afterwards and make you question your beliefs and values than this is not for you.  But if you are looking for a movie that is full of explosions, aliens and the such then Battle: LA might just be for you.  Keep in mind there is a fairly strong pro-American army message throughout the movie, which while not always a bad thing will certainly alienate a lot of potential viewers.
